Following the enactment of the Local Autonomy Act on July 4, 1947, a local council for Daejeon was formed for three terms of office from 1952 until 1961. However, the local council was dissolved in 1961, and 30 years later on June 20, 1991, an council election was held, which opened a new chapter in the era of local autonomy.
